Real-World Data Takes Center Stage at TOBI 2025

At TOBI 2025, DataBiologics took center stage as physicians and device makers showcased how real-world registry data is transforming regenerative medicine. From evidence-backed presentations to industry collaborations powered by patient-reported outcomes, the event underscored a future driven by transparency, data, and collaboration.

A Look Back

DataBiologics debuted its outcomes tracking platform at the Orthobiologics Institute (TOBI) in 2019. Founded by pioneering physicians Drs. Gerard Malanga, Chris Rogers, and Jay Bowen, the platform was introduced to enthusiastic reception from clinicians eager to collect and analyze patient-reported outcomes (PROs).

This historic launch marked the beginning of DataBiologics’ mission: to advance patient care and clinical innovation by equipping providers with actionable real-world data, and to pave the way for transparency and data-driven decision-making.

Since then, DataBiologics has become a cornerstone of the TOBI stage. Each year, more physicians present findings from their clinics and from the broader registry, transforming anecdotes into evidence and accelerating the field’s understanding of orthobiologics.

At TOBI 2025, this vision was on full display. Physicians presented outcomes from thousands of cases highlighting both the strengths and limitations of treatments like BMAC, PRP, and adjunctive therapies. The registry has matured into a trusted source for benchmarking results, validating protocols, and guiding clinical decisions. Providers wishing to excel in their craft are letting the data speak, using transparent evidence to elevate both individual practice and the field as a whole. By putting transparent, patient-centered data at the center of the conversation, TOBI 2025 showcased how collaborative evidence is shaping the future of regenerative medicine.

Real-World Data on the Podium

At TOBI 2025, registry-driven insights once again took center stage:

  • Don Buford, MD shared results from his last 186 bone marrow concentrate (BMC) cases, showing meaningful and durable pain reduction across two years of follow-up.
  • Rowan Paul, MD presented “BMC for MSK Disease: What Registry Data Reveals About Outcomes,” highlighting where BMC is most effective and where limitations remain. His talk underscored the power of aggregated registry data to move beyond anecdote toward evidence-based care.
  • Dr. Paul also presented “By the Numbers: MFAT Therapy Real World Data,” showing how adipose-derived treatments are emerging as strong options for knee and shoulder OA. One granular insight from the real-world data reveals a potential link between adipose extraction site and outcomes, with abdominal-sourced adipose linked to stronger knee OA improvements.

Med Device Sponsored Presentations Powered By Real-World Evidence

TOBI 2025 also showcased how medical device companies are teaming up with DataBiologics and their physician leaders to bring fresh, real-world data straight to clinicians. Rather than relying solely on controlled trials or anecdotal reports, sponsors are using registry outcomes to show how their technologies perform in daily practice.

  • Cutting Edge Laser Technologies hosted a sponsored lunch with Dr. Ariana DeMers, who presented on combining MLS® Laser Therapy with orthobiologics. Using outcomes captured through DataBiologics, she demonstrated how pairing laser therapy with biologics can accelerate recovery and improve long-term results.
  • SoftWave TRT also held a sponsored lunch session, highlighting how their shockwave technology is being used in tandem with orthobiologic interventions. By leveraging DataBiologics registry outcomes, Dr. Rikin Patel showcased the real-world effectiveness of non-invasive shockwave in various applications.

With DataBiologics supplying the evidence, device companies and clinicians are now showing how integrated treatment strategies can deliver better outcomes and new standards of care.

Honoring a Legacy

Finally, TOBI 2025 honored our late co-founder Dr. Gerard Malanga with the Malanga Education Award, presented to Dr. Sharmila Tulpule. Her reflections on receiving the award underscored the lasting impact of Dr. Malanga’s vision and dedication to advancing orthobiologics through education and data.

Looking Ahead

Six years after its debut, the DataBiologics registry has become an anchor for both scientific presentations and industry collaborations at TOBI. By placing transparent, patient-centered outcomes at the heart of the conversation, TOBI 2025 made clear: the future of regenerative medicine is collaborative, evidence-driven, and powered by real-world data.
